105 hospital, health system projects in 2022 worth $100M or more, ranked

Becker's has reported on more than 100 hospital and health system projects worth $100 million or more in 2022, including 20 with a $1 billion price tag or higher.

Big-ticket 2022 hospital and health system projects, in order from most to least expensive:

1. Developer breaks ground on $5B medical campus in Las Vegas

Pacific Life, a Salt Lake City-based developer, broke ground on a $5 billion Las Vegas medical campus. 

2. UCSF receives board approval for $4.3B hospital

University of California San Francisco received approval from the University of California's board of regents to build a $4.3 billion hospital at UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center in San Francisco.

3. U of California-Davis starts demolition for $3B tower

Construction crews began demolishing temporary offices to build a nearly $3.8 billion tower at Sacramento-based University of California Davis Medical Center, the Sacramento Bee reported May 10. 

4. Mass General Brigham gets green light for $2B in capital improvements

Boston-based Mass General Brigham received approval from state regulators to move ahead with a more than $2 billion expansion plan at Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, WBUR reported May 4.

5. Cooper University Health plans $2B expansion

Cooper University Healthcare is planning a $2 billion expansion to its Camden, N.J., campus. 

6. Sharp HealthCare launches $2B construction project

San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare kicked off its $2 billion capital improvement plan with its May 26 groundbreaking for Sharp Memorial Hospital's Cushman Emergency and Trauma Center.

7. Concept released for Inova's $2B hospital

Land-use plans for Inova Alexandria (Va.) Hospital's $2 billion project have been approved and concept designs have been presented to the city, ABC affiliate WJLA reported March 22. 

8. Construction on $1.9B Ohio hospital resumes after repairs to cracked column

Construction resumed after cracks were found on Columbus-based Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's $1.9 billion hospital tower. 

9. $1.7B upgrade of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center gets key approval

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 8 approved a $1.7 billion capital project for Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in West Carson, Calif. 

10. Kaiser plans $1.7B expansion

Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente is expanding two hospitals and building two medical offices in a $1.7 billion project.

11. IU Health plans new $1.6B flagship hospital with 3-tower structure

Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health has filed design plans for a new flagship hospital in downtown Indianapolis that would include a three-tower structure. The facility would cost $1.6 billion, according to the Indy Star.

12. UPMC breaks ground on $1.5B hospital

Pittsburgh-based UPMC broke ground on a $1.5 billion 17-story hospital.

13. Houston Methodist starts site preparation for $1.4B tower

Houston Methodist has begun site preparation for its $1.4 billion Centennial Tower, which will be 26 stories tall and connect to the Paula and Joseph C. "Rusty" Walter III Tower.

14.  New Jersey's lone public hospital seeks $1.2B for replacement facility

University Hospital in Newark, N.J., is in desperate need of improvements as it deals with overcrowding in its emergency department and maintenance issues, advocates say, nj.com reported May 1. It is the only public hospital in the state.

15. JPS Health's $1.2B expansion: 4 details

County commissioners heard construction proposals March 17 for Fort Worth, Texas-based JPS Health Network's $1.2 billion capital project, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported March 17.

16. Roper St. Francis set to build new $1B South Carolina hospital

Charleston, S.C.-based Roper St. Francis is set to build a new $1 billion hospital in North Charleston.

17. St. Louis VA hospital could get $1B overhaul

St. Louis Veterans Administration Health is planning a $1 billion renovation for its St. Louis-based John Cochran Veterans Hospital.

18. $1B Hoag expansion will add 2 hospitals, up to 1,500 staff

Newport Beach, Calif.-based Hoag is spending $1 billion on a project that will add two specialty hospitals.

19. Cleveland Clinic opens $1B 184-bed London hospital

Cleveland Clinic expanded its global presence with the opening of its 184-bed hospital in London on March 29. The hospital, estimated to cost $1 billion, employs about 1,150 caregivers.

20. VA plans $1B replacement hospital in New York

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has submitted a preliminary $1 billion proposal to replace the Buffalo (N.Y.) VA Medical Center, The Buffalo News reported March 4.

21. Essentia Health to add 32 ICU beds to new $915M hospital

Citing a changed healthcare landscape, Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health will add 32 intensive care unit beds to its Vision Northland hospital project.

22. Essentia Health to tear down old hospital, build new tower in $900M expansion

Duluth, Minn.-based Essentia Health will demolish St. Mary's Medical Center and build a new 12-story, 942,000-square-foot hospital tower as part of its $900 million project, the Star Tribune reported Jan. 18.

23. Mayo Clinic invests $785M in capital projects

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic will invest $785 million to build a hospital in Wisconsin and expand hospitals in Minnesota and Florida.

24. Technology drives Hackensack Meridian's new $714M pavilion

Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health plans to unveil Helena Theurer Pavilion — a $714 million, 530,000-square-foot project — on Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center's campus in December. Health system officials called it the most technologically advanced hospital in the U.S. 

25. Providence plans $712M expansion in California 

Renton, Wash.-based Providence is investing $712 million to expand in southern California. Providence is building two new multispecialty medical centers in San Clemente and Rancho Mission Viejo, Calif. The health system will also build a new patient tower at Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif.

26. 10 years in the making, controversial $700M Chicago hospital approved

Chicago-based St. Anthony Hospital received approval from the City Council to move to a new location on the city's south side, despite concerns from residents that it will gentrify the community and raise prices, Block Club Chicago reported Jan. 26. 

27. Howard University to receive $100M in federal funding for $650M hospital

Howard University will receive $100 million from the federal government to replace its hospital in Washington, D.C., Washington Business Journal reported March 23.

28. Advocate hospital plans $645M modernization project

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago plans to invest $645 million in a campus modernization project, according to an application filed with an Illinois planning board.

29. New York hospital plans $641M expansion project

UR Medicine's Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., is planning a $557 million expansion project with a nine-story tower and 100 private inpatient rooms, the Democrat & Chronicle reported March 22.

30. UChicago Medicine secures approval to design $633M cancer center

University of Chicago Medicine received approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to begin designing and planning the state's first freestanding cancer center, which will cost $633 million.

31. Tulane plans $600M redevelopment of abandoned hospital

Charity Hospital in New Orleans has sat vacant for 17 years. Now, Tulane University plans to give it new life as the core of its downtown medical school. 

32. $600M Michigan hospital to open in March

McLaren Greater Lansing (Mich.) will open its $600 million, 750,000-square-foot hospital March 6, the Lansing State Journal reported Feb. 18.

33. UC Davis to build $579M outpatient surgery center

UC Davis (Calif.) Health is planning a $579 million outpatient surgery center at its Sacramento, Calif., campus, which it expects to build by 2025, The Sacramento Bee reported June 2.

34. $561M North Dakota hospital project set for January completion

The $561 million construction of Minot (N.D.) Trinity Hospital is set for a January completion and an April opening, The Grand Forks Herald reported Dec. 12.

35. Health First's $508M expansion plan moves forward

Health First's $508 million plan to build a new hospital and "wellness village" received the necessary approvals to move forward July 19 from Brevard (Fla.) County officials, according to a report from Florida Today. 

36. UT Health San Antonio tops out new $500M hospital

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio leaders celebrated Oct. 17 as construction crews reached the highest point of the system's new $500 million research and multispecialty hospital. 

37. Vanderbilt University Medical Center plans $500M expansion

Vanderbilt University Medical Center unveiled plans July 25 for its first major addition since 2009 and largest expansion to date: a 15-level inpatient tower slated for completion in 2027. The project is expected to cost at least $500 million. 

38. Mercy to invest $500M to further expansion in Arkansas

St. Louis-based Mercy health system entered its second phase of planning to expand services in the Northwest Arkansas area, investing $500 million. The phase includes a state-of-the-art cancer facility, emergency department, expanding isolation rooms, new clinic locations, additional outpatient services, and "doubling the current number of primary care physicians and specialists," according to a July 19 press release.

39. Catholic Health breaks ground on $500M pavilion

Catholic Health broke ground May 12 on a $500 million patient care pavilion at its Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, N.Y.

40. Kaweah Health to build $500M wing

Visalia, Calif.-based Kaweah Health is planning to replace one of its hospital's wings with a nine-story, $500 million facility, Visalia Times Delta reported April 20.

41. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist reveals plans for $450M care tower

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist plans to build a new $450 million patient care tower on its Ardmore hospital campus, Winston-Salem Journal reported Sept. 29. 

42. Mary Bridge Children's Hospital updates plans for its $415M project

Tacoma, Wash.-based Mary Bridge Children's Hospital has made changes to its $415 million construction project. The campus was originally slated to open in late 2024 but will now open in early 2026. 

43. Georgia hospital to add 132 beds through $400M project

Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Northside Hospital Gwinnett broke ground on a $400 million expansion project, which includes a new patient tower and a medical office building.

44. Delayed $400M Virginia psychiatric hospital facing $50M cost increase

Replacing Virginia's Central State Hospital could cost up to $400 million, approximately $50 million higher than current estimates.

45. Northwestern Medical looks to expand Lake Forest location in $389M project

Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine, which operates 13 hospitals in Illinois, plans to expand facilities at its Lake Forest location at a cost of $389 million, according to a Dec. 20 report from the Chicago Tribune.

45. California VA hospital to get $387M in upgrades

Long Beach, Calif.-based Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center is planning $387 million worth of renovations. The renovations include a new mental health facility and community living center. 

46.  Altru resumes construction of $380M hospital after COVID-19 delay

Altru Health System has resumed construction on its $380 million hospital in Grand Forks, N.D., after it was paused because of COVID-19 problems, the Grand Forks Herald reported March 4.

47. $375M UHS hospital breaks ground in DC

A $375 million, 136-bed hospital in Washington, D.C. — run by King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services — will break ground Feb. 17, The Washington Post reported.

48. USDA to invest $360M for 200-bed rural Alabama hospital

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will give $360 million to Medical West Hospital Authority to build a 200-bed hospital in rural Alabama.

49. Pennsylvania hospital plans to build $350M patient tower

The board of directors at State College, Pa.-based Mount Nittany Health has approved a $350 million patient tower on the Mount Nittany Medical Center campus. The new tower will be 10 floors and 300,000 square feet.

50. Shepherd Center to embark on $350M expansion, its largest ever

Atlanta-based Shepherd Center, a hospital specializing in brain and spinal cord injury, is planning a $350 million expansion, marking its largest-ever expansion, WSB-TV2 reported Sept. 29.

51. HCA subsidiary plans $350M Kentucky hospital

TriStar Greenview Regional, a subsidiary of Nashville-based HCA Healthcare, has applied to build a $350 million acute care hospital with 72 beds in Bowling Green, Ky., Bowling Green Daily News reported April 21.

52. Dignity Health breaks ground on $350M Mercy Hospital Bakersfield expansion

San Francisco-based Dignity Health held a March 11 groundbreaking for the building phase of its $350 million renovation of Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield, Calif.

53. California hospital receives approval for $333M expansion

Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, Calif., received unanimous approval from the city council for a $333 million expansion project. 

54. Ascension St. Vincent breaks ground on $325M specialty hospital

Indianapolis-based Ascension St. Vincent Hospital has broken ground on a $325 million brain and spine hospital. 

55. Ascension Seton to build $320M women's tower

Ascension Seton will build a $320 million, 282,000-square-foot women's tower on its Austin, Texas, campus.

56. Lee Health moves trauma center in $315M project

Lee Health relocated its trauma center from Lee Memorial Hospital to Gulf Coast Medical Center, all based in Fort Myers, in a $315 million project.

57. Oklahoma health system building $300M expansion

Norman (Okla.) Regional Health System is planning a $300 million, five-part expansion project. The system recently finished construction on one part of the project, a $22.8 million freestanding emergency department. 

58. Hoag launches $300 million expansion, renovation campaign

Newport Beach, Calif.-based Hoag Health is launching a $300 million campaign to expand its Irving hospital.

59. IU Health to begin $300M expansion

Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health's Saxony Hospital in Fishers broke ground on a $300 million expansion. The hospital will be renamed IU Health Fishers, according to a news release shared with Becker's

60. Children's Hospital New Orleans completes $300M expansion

Children's Hospital New Orleans has finished its $300 million expansion, which includes 230,000 square feet of new clinical care space, nola.com reported April 17.

61. Texas Health to open $300M tower April 2

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth will open its $300 million, nine-story tower April 2, the largest construction project in the system's history.

62. Kaiser Permanente seeks to build $298M inpatient tower

Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente filed an application with the state Department of Health Care Access and Information to build a $298 million inpatient tower with 138 beds at Roseville (Calif.) Medical Center, The Sacramento Bee reported Feb. 8.

63. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia opens $289M inpatient facility

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia opened its new inpatient hospital in King of Prussia, Pa., on Jan. 26; it spans more than 250,000 square feet. The facility, called the Middleman Family Pavilion, is CHOP's second inpatient hospital.

64. UCHealth hospital plans $280M expansion

Loveland, Colo.-based UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies will embark on a $280 million expansion of its campus, including a new patient tower, a comprehensive cancer center, a larger emergency department and space for more imaging and cardiac services.

65. New York hospital unveils new ER in $250M renovation project

New York City-based Richmond University Medical Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new emergency department Oct. 25. The new department is part of the hospital's $250 million renovation and expansion project.

66. Beacon Health sets timeline for $232M Indiana hospital renovation

South Bend, Ind.-based Beacon Health System's $232 million construction project for Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Ind. will be completed in March 2026.

67. IU School of Medicine breaks ground on $230M medical education, research building

Indiana University School of Medicine broke ground in downtown Indianapolis on a $230 million medical education and research building. Plans call for an 11-story structure and more than 326,000 gross square feet to address the university's growing instructional and research needs. 

68. Trinity Health plans $230M, 56-bed hospital in Michigan 

Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health plans to open a four-story, 174,000-square-foot hospital as part of its Trinity Health Medical Center - Brighton campus. The $230 million replacement hospital will have 56 acuity beds, eight operating rooms, 18 short stay unit beds and additional room for future growth.

69. Steward Health's $227M construction project on hold

Texarkana, Texas-based Wadley Regional Medical Center, owned by Dallas-based Steward Health Care, paused the $227 million construction of its facility, KSLA reported Oct. 20. The reason for the pause has not yet been announced. The hospital was due to open in 2024. 

70. Methodist Health to build $200M Texas hospital

Dallas-based Methodist Health System is planning a 200,000-square-foot, $200 million hospital in Celina, Texas, and is expected to break ground this year.

71. Tennessee hospital breaks ground on $200M upgrade

Franklin, Tenn.-based Williamson Medical Center broke ground on a $200 million expansion and renovation. The project will improve almost every department, including labor and delivery, the neonatal intensive care unit, cardiology, emergency room and the intensive care unit.

72. Mayo Clinic breaks ground on $198M Wisconsin hospital

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System broke ground on its 70-bed hospital in La Crosse, Wis., April 12. The project is estimated to cost $198 million.

73. Piedmont completes $194M patient tower

Atlanta-based Piedmont has finished its $194 million patient tower at Piedmont Athens (Ga.) Regional, which spans nearly 229,000 square feet.

74. Roper St. Francis hospital to more than double in size with $193M project

Charleston, S.C.-based Roper St. Francis Healthcare is planning to more than double the size of its Berkeley Hospital in four years through a $193 million investment.

75. WVU Medicine planning $177M upgrade, expansion projects

Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine will spend over $177 million on upgrade and expansion projects over the next two years at facilities across its network.

76. Novant Health breaks ground on $169M expansion

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health broke ground June 8 on its $169 million expansion project at Matthews (N.C.) Medical Center.

77. Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital wraps $166M expansion

Hollywood, Fla.-based Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital finished its $166 million expansion. The hospital has grown from 180,000 square feet to 400,000 square feet and added four new floors.

78. Arkansas hospital breaks ground on $163M expansion

Officials broke ground on a $162.5 million emergency department and intensive care unit expansion at Mercy Hospital Fort Smith (Ark.) on Feb. 22.

79. Mayo Clinic breaks ground on $155M Minnesota hospital expansion

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System broke ground May 5 on its $155 million hospital expansion project in Mankato, Minn., a spokesperson for the system confirmed to Becker's.

80. BayCare Florida hospital opens $152M tower

St. Petersburg, Fla.-based St. Anthony's Hospital opened its $152 million patient tower, which adds 90 private rooms, Tampa Bay Times reported May 24.

81. Spectrum Health invests $151M in three buildings

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spectrum Health will construct three outpatient buildings in west Michigan that will cost $151 million.

82. Atrium Health opens $150M hospital

Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health Union West opened to the public Feb. 23 and includes 40 licensed beds and a 24/7 emergency department. The 150,000-square-foot facility was an investment of more than $150 million.

83. New Hampshire plans $150M patient pavilion expansion

Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is in the midst of building a $150 million inpatient pavilion, CBS affiliate WCAX reported Sept. 21. 

84. Oklahoma hospital breaks ground on $150M expansion project

Saint Francis Hospital Muskogee (Okla.) broke ground on its new $150 million building. The 126-room building will include intensive care units, progressive care units, a new lobby and a chapel.

85. $145M approved for cancer, surgery center at UT Health RGV

The new University of Texas Health Rio Grande Valley Cancer and Surgery Center landed approval for $145 million from the University of Texas System Board of Regents.

86. U of Louisville Health breaks ground on $144M tower

University of Louisville (Ky.) Health broke ground June 6 on a $144 million expansion project of University of Louisville Hospital. With the expansion, the hospital will have more than 360 beds all in private rooms, according to a health system news release. There will be 20 operating rooms and a new 24-bed observation unit.

87. $140M VA hospital coming to Oklahoma 

The Eastern Oklahoma Veterans Affairs Health Care System plans to open a $140 million, 58-bed hospital in Tulsa in 2025.

88. Georgia hospital to spend $125M on expansion

Valdosta-based South Georgia Medical Center is planning a $125 million expansion, which includes a tower dedicated to the care of women and infants.

89. UChicago Medicine breaks ground on $121M multispecialty care facility

UChicago Medicine broke ground on a $121 million two-story, 130,000-square-foot multispecialty care center and microhospital in Crown Point, Ind. The facility will be UChicago Medicine's largest off-site facility and first freestanding building in Indiana and is expected to open in spring 2024.

90. $114M Texas replacement hospital will be twice as big, require no financing

Reeves County Hospital in Pecos, Texas, is planning a $114 million replacement facility that will double its size, the Odessa American reported May 3. And will be paid for in cash.

91. Florida hospital to undergo $113M expansion

Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice in Florida is planning a third patient tower on its campus, representing a $113 million investment.

92. WMCHealth opens new $113M hospital in upstate New York

Upstate New York has a new hospital facility courtesy of a collaboration between Valhalla-based WMCHealth and the state. The $113 million HealthAlliance hospital project in Kingston is expected to rise eventually to a $134.9 million overall cost.

93. New York hospital set to reopen after $113M renovation project

Kingston, N.Y.-based HealthAlliance Hospital on Mary's Avenue is set to reopen Dec. 14, following a $113 million renovation project, the Daily Freeman reported Dec. 7.

94. Washington health system breaks ground on $112M hospital

Prosser (Wa.) Memorial Health broke ground on a new $112 million hospital slated to be ready for patients by 2024.

95. Cohen Children's Medical Center opens new $110M pediatric surgical operating complex

New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Cohen Children's Medical Center opened its $110 million, 24,000-square-foot pediatric surgical center Aug. 9. The center focuses on cardiothoracic, neurologic and orthopedic procedures, along with general surgery.

96. Cape Fear Valley Health plans $110M expansion

Fayetteville, N.C.-based Cape Fear Valley Health System is planning a $110 million expansion of its flagship hospital, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

97. Rural Kansas hospital to be built using $108M USDA grant

Colby, Kan.-based Citizens Medical Center is to build a replacement hospital and clinic with the aid of a $108 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development unit.

98. Deborah Heart and Lung Center breaks ground on $108M expansion

Browns Mills, N.J.-based Deborah Heart and Lung Center held a ceremonial groundbreaking Feb. 21 on its $108 million expansion and renovation, which coincides with the hospital's 100th anniversary.

99. Ochsner Health hospital nears completion of $100M expansion project

Ochsner Lafayette (La.) General Medical Center is expected to wrap most of its $100 million expansion by the end of the year. 

100. Dayton Children's Hospital plans $100M expansion

Dayton (Ohio) Children's Hospital plans to construct a $100 million behavioral health center on its campus, Dayton Daily News reported Sept. 19. 

101. ThedaCare breaks ground on $100M hospital modernization project

Neenah, Wis.-based ThedaCare broke ground on its $100 million hospital modernization project for ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah, which will double the size of the current emergency department.

102. HCA Florida hospital unveils new $100M wing

Fort Walton Beach-based HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital opened its new $100 million wing on Aug. 30, ABC affiliate 3WEAR-TV reported Aug. 30. 

103. New Jersey hospital unveils $100M expansion

Jersey City (N.J.) Medical Center unveiled a $100 million, 60,000-square-foot expansion of its emergency department. The expansion includes a new pediatric emergency department, more treatment rooms, and surgical suites.

104. HCA hospital in Florida opens $100M expansion

Fort Pierce-based HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, opened a $100 million, four-story tower expansion on June 23. 

105. Maryland puts forward $100M for new hospital

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced he will put $100 million into building a new University of Maryland Medical System hospital in Easton, ABC affiliate WMAR2 reported Dec. 15.
