Six medical schools and campuses are slated to welcome their first students in 2027, adding to a wave of new programs aimed at easing projected physician shortages.
Four have earned preliminary accreditation or pre-accreditation, which allows them to recruit their inaugural classes. Several aim to train physicians for underserved or rural communities.
Here are the six schools opening next year:
1. Aria University School of Medicine (French Camp, Calif.) is expected to open in 2027, pending accreditation. It would be the first medical school in San Joaquin County, a federally designated medically underserved area. It is in applicant status with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
2. BYU School of Medicine (Provo, Utah) has received preliminary accreditation and is authorized to recruit its inaugural class of up to 60 students. Construction is expected to begin in 2027. The first cohort will begin in July 2027, and students will train in a renovated part of the former Provo High School until the medical school building is complete.
3. Indiana University of Pennsylvania College of Osteopathic Medicine (Indiana, Pa.) has received pre-accreditation and is set to welcome its first cohort of 60 students in fall 2027. It plans to grow its student cohorts to 120 per class by 2029.
4. University of Missouri School of Medicine’s Springfield campus is expanding into a four-year regional medical school, and is set to welcome its first cohort of 32 students in summer 2027.
5. Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (New Orleans) received preliminary accreditation, and its inaugural class of 50 students will begin courses in summer 2027. The school is a partnership between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health, and the only historically Black college or university medical school in the Gulf South.
6. Xavier University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Cincinnati) is set to welcome its inaugural class of 75 students in fall 2027. It is in pre-accreditation status and will become the world’s first Jesuit osteopathic medical school and Ohio’s first new medical school in nearly 50 years.
