Hematology/oncology is the most in-demand physician specialty when ranked by job openings relative to workforce size, according to AMN Healthcare’s 2026 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives released Sept. 16.
The report is based on a representative sample of the 1,293 permanent physician and advanced practitioner searches AMN Healthcare conducted from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
AMN Healthcare measures each specialty’s “absolute demand” by dividing its job openings by its total number of active physicians, rather than by raw search volume. This keeps specialties with large workforces, such as family medicine, from ranking high on size alone.
The 10 physician specialties with the highest absolute demand:
- Hematology/oncology
- Gastroenterology
- Cardiology (interventional)
- Endocrinology
- Cardiology (noninvasive)
- Radiology
- Urology
- Anesthesiology
- Neurology
- Obstetrics/gynecology
