California is getting a new medical school in San Joaquin County, CBS News reported Sept. 22.
Here is what is currently known:
1. The school will be operated by Milpitas, Calif.-based Aria University, a private nonprofit, and will be the first medical school in that area. San Joaquin County is a designated medically underserved area.
“Because we have a community that is in desperate need of healthcare, and they don’t have it,” Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi told CBS. “By having this medical school here — a teaching hospital — they will be able to get the care that everybody is so desperately in need of.”
2. An existing county building near San Joaquin General Hospital, a 152-bed teaching hospital, will be renovated to host the medical school. The university has signed a 30-year lease with the county for $1 a year.
3. Renovations are expected to take two years, and the school will begin operations in 2027. The project will create around 600 new jobs.
