Hackensack Meridian Health invests big in AI speech company

Hackensack Meridian Health, based Edison, N.J., and its innovation accelerator program, Bear's Den, has invested in software company Canary Speech, a company that assesses digital biomarkers.

The company uses speech AI technology to monitor "digital biomarkers" in the human voice, according to a June 14 press release from Hackensack Meridian Health. The technology can explain or predict energy levels and health-related outcomes, as well as track the presence and severity of diseases such as anxiety, depression and cognitive decline.

"This is a fascinating innovation, and we're eager to support a promising way to leverage technology for wellness," Robert Garrett, CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, said in the release. "Artificial intelligence is impacting every aspect of modern life, and our health network wants to help accelerate the efforts of companies like Canary Speech."

Hackensack Meridian Health did not disclose how much money it invested in the company.
