Police subdue man flailing hatchet at Lawrence Memorial Hospital

Police subdued a man who allegedly threatened security personnel with a hatchet at Lawrence (Kan.) Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, reports the Lawrence Journal-World.

Lawrence police received a report at 1:20 p.m. that a man with an axe was threatening security personnel and other people at the hospital. When police arrived to the scene, the man was in the parking lot and was screaming for the responding officers to shoot him.

Police told the man to drop the hatchet. The man complied, but then charged at the officers, according to the report.

One officer used a Taser but it was not effective due to the man's thick clothing. Officers were able to restrain the man and he was taken in for an evaluation.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident.
