Providence provides employee bonuses for nurse referrals

With the national nursing shortage hitting hard, Providence Health & Services, Southern California, a nonprofit Catholic healthcare ministry of Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services, have been aggressively recruiting experienced RNs.

Providence kicked off its 90 Nurses in 90 Days recruitment campaign Sept. 1, offering bonuses up to $5,000 to employees who successfully refer nurses to Providence for specific specialties including emergency care, intensive care, cardiac catheterization and surgery.

With the recruitment drive complete, the ministry reported hiring more than the projected 120 nurses per month for its hospitals, long-term care, home health and outpatient centers. While bonuses were for referrals of experienced nurses, Providence, Southern California also actively recruited 130 new graduates and nurses seeking to learn new specialties.

Another recruitment drive will begin in November, officials said. Providence, Southern California, has a total need for about 40,000 nurses.
