New Orleans to Purchase Methodist Hospital for $16.25M

The city of New Orleans will pay Universal Health Services $16.25 million to acquire Methodist Hospital, which has been closed since after Hurricane Katrina, according to a Times-Picayune report.

The city is currently negotiating with another hospital operator to manage the hospital. City officials have said the hospital should reopen by 2013, and emergency services could return as early as this year. The redevelopment costs are estimated to be around $110 million, according to the report.

The deal brings an end to nearly two years of discussions between the city on UHS on the future of the hospital. Earlier this month, the city offered $9.7 million for the facility, but UHS rejected the bid calling it too low.
