GOP lawmakers close to ACA stabilization bill: 3 things to know

Republican legislators from the Senate and House met Thursday to try and smooth out differences between their respective ACA stabilization bills, according to The Hill.

Here are three things to know about the meeting.

1. Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, sat down with Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., to discuss measures, such as the Alexander-Murray bill, to fund cost-sharing subsidies and Ms. Collins' reinsurance bill.

2. The group wants to include some sort of ACA stabilization legislation in the long-term government spending bill set to be considered in March.

"We actually think we're very close. We hope it will be part of the omnibus," Mr. Alexander told The Hill. "We're comparing notes on the bills."

3. Though dissent from conservative House members was one of the biggest impediments in passing ACA stabilization measures in 2017, Rep. Ryan Costello, R-Pa., has been working on a reinsurance bill similar to the one proposed by Ms. Collins and Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla. Mr. Costello's bill would provide $10 billion per year for reinsurance programs.

"We were very impressed with the work that Rep. Costello has done and hope that it could be a part of what the House decides to do," Mr. Alexander told The Hill.
