Maryland Hospital Association President Responds to CEO Salary Attacks

Carmela Coyle, president and CEO of the Maryland Hospital Association, responded Thursday to criticisms of the high salaries of Baltimore-area nonprofit hospital CEOs, according to a letter from Ms. Coyle in The Baltimore Sun.

She argued Baltimore hospital leaders provide more than 88,000 Maryland jobs, make healthcare available 24 hours a day, bring patients the latest technology and procedures and manage the uncertainties of healthcare reform.

She also said Maryland hospital CEO compensation is decided by boards that follow nationally recommended practices for setting contract terms, evaluating CEO performance and reviewing comparable salaries.
