Healthcare CEOs made $4.6M on average in 2017

On average, healthcare industry CEOs received $4,631,579 in total direct compensation in 2017, according to a study from professional services firm BDO.

BDO's study looked at total direct compensation for middle market executives in eight industries. The researchers used data provided by and public company data gathered from proxies and other sources.

Total direct compensation included average salary, bonus and annual incentives, stock options, full-value stock awards and other long-term incentives.

Five other report findings:

1. The total direct compensation paid to healthcare industry CEOs and CFOs for fiscal years 2017 and 2016 is as follows:

2017 CEO pay: $4,631,579

2016 CEO pay: $4,589,657

2017 CFO pay: $1,630,613

2016 CFO pay: $1,585,340

2. Although total direct compensation for healthcare CEOs stayed relatively consistent year over year, annual incentive and stock option use each rose by 18 percent.

3. Compensation paid as long-term incentives and equity for healthcare CEOs decreased by 3 percent from 2016-17.

4. The average salary for healthcare CEOs was $750,584 in 2017, up 2.5 percent from $732,461 in 2016.

5. For healthcare CFOs, the average salary was $428,480 in 2017, down 9.7 percent from $474,365 in 2016.
