In recent years, the scale and breadth of data has grown exponentially—along with its potential to positively impact our quality of life. Algorithms built on millions of transactions suggest products we should try, movies we might like and people we should meet. Our vehicles rely on a stream of data to keep us safe on the road, while novel software applications help people more efficiently travel and invest their money.

Today, sophisticated machine learning and artificial intelligence are also prevalent in nearly every corner of the hospital campus. In areas ranging from telehealth to vaccine development in commercial R&D laboratories, insights from data are the foundation for care that’s becoming increasingly agile, personalized and patient-centric.

The emergence of a more data-focused health care industry is good news, says Rich Mahoney, leader of the futures R&D segment of Intuitive, a company that specializes in minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgical platforms. While data generated from the company’s da Vinci surgical systems already enables real-time decision making, further advancements are on the horizon.

“It’s a strong platform to continuously inform and impact how surgery will be conducted,” Mahoney says. “The ability to access more case information, more knowledge and more insights is not only groundbreaking—it’s also not that far away.”  Click here to continue>>
