Last independent hospital in Long Island eyes merger

The last independent hospital in Long Island, N.Y., is exploring an affiliation agreement with Stony Brook (N.Y.) University Hospital, according to Newsday.

Long Island Community Hospital has signed a letter of intent with Stony Brook to work on a deal.

"Both entities see the enormous benefits of working together to serve the health care needs of Suffolk County and are looking forward to further advancing their respective goals as Suffolk County’s only academic medical center and Long Island Community Hospital's mission as a community hospital," Stony Brook hospital officials said in a news release.

The other former independent hospitals in Long Island that already secured partners told Newsday they were able to save on operating expenses by leaning on their health system partners.
