9 Recently Formed Commercial ACOs

The following commercial accountable care organizations or arrangements were announced since June, beginning with the most recent.

1-2. Cigna Launches Two New ACOs in Ohio, Maine
Portland, Maine-based Mercy Health System formed an accountable care partnership with Cigna, which includes 40 physicians aligned with the system and 4,300 individuals covered by Cigna.

Meanwhile, Columbus, Ohio-based Mount Carmel Health Partners, part of Mount Carmel Health System, penned an accountable care agreement, which includes 67 physicians and 3,100 individuals covered by Cigna.

3-4. Cigna Launches 2 More Accountable Care Initiatives in Vermont, Houston
Nearly 150 physicians with Burlington, Vt.-based Fletcher Allen Health Care and Berlin, Vt.-based Central Vermont Medical Center are part of a new Vermont-based Cigna accountable care initiative covering more than 10,000 Cigna-insured individuals.

A separate Cigna ACO arrangement in Houston between St. Luke's Health System Clinically Integrated Providers and Renaissance Physician Organization includes 44,000 individuals covered by Cigna and more than 2,000 healthcare professionals.

5. BCBS of North Carolina, Wilmington Health Launch ACO
Multispecialty physician group Wilmington (N.C.) Health has partnered in an ACO with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carlina. The ACO will include development of a new oncology program to improve health outcomes through treatments that follow the latest evidence-based research.

6. Cigna Launches New ACO With Denver Physician Group
Cigna and New West Physicians P.C., a Denver-based physicians group, launched a collaborative accountable care initiative, which includes 60 primary physicians and 20 mid-level providers and nearly 8,000 Cigna-insured individuals.

7. Cigna Launches Its First California ACO With Palo Alto Medical Foundation
Cigna began an accountable care initiative with Palo Alto Medical Foundation, an affiliate of Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health. The ACO venture will cover 21,000 people in a Cigna PPO and include more than 1,000 physicians.

8. Aetna, Hunterdon Healthcare Launch ACO in New Jersey
Aetna and Hunterdon Healthcare Partners in Flemington, N.J., formed an ACO that will cover nearly 8,000 people. The Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township, N.J., along with more than 225 affiliated primary care physicians, will coordinate care for the Cigna beneficiaries.

9. John Muir Health, Blue Shield of California Launch ACO
Walnut Creek, Calif.-based John Muir Health and Blue Shield of California formed an accountable care organization to cover 16,000 Blue Shield HMO enrollees, including more than 6,000 people enrolled in the California Public Employees' Retirement System.
