Cigna Launches 2 More Accountable Care Initiatives in Vermont, Houston

Cigna has been busy setting up accountable care initiatives recently, announcing four new ventures this week.

Today, the health insurer announced two accountable care initiatives, Cigna's version of accountable care organizations. One initiative is with Burlington, Vt.-based Fletcher Allen Health Care and Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin; the other is with two Houston-area provider networks.

Cigna's Vermont ACO will benefit around 10,500 people covered by Cigna who receive care from 144 primary care professionals at 21 practice locations connected to the participating medical centers.

Fletcher Allen Health Care is a medical center in alliance with the University of Vermont College of Medicine and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Fletcher Allen Partners is the parent organization of both Fletcher Allen Health Care and Central Vermont Medical Center.

Meanwhile, a separate Cigna accountable care initiative in the Houston area with St. Luke's Health System Clinically Integrated Providers and Renaissance Physician Organization will include 44,000 individuals covered by a Cigna health plan who receive care from approximately 500 healthcare professionals affiliated with St. Luke's and more than 1,600 healthcare professionals with Renaissance.

Cigna is now part of 32 accountable care initiatives across 16 states. The health insurer is planning to set up 100 initiatives by the end of 2014.
