Here are four things to know about the issue.

1. About 1 percent of the 422 employees, including staff from care management, nursing and registration, are affected.

2. The layoffs take effect Feb. 14, Wendy Jacobson, president and CEO of Orleans Community Health, said in a statement.

3. Ms. Jacobson said Orleans Community Health expects to keep the actual number of reductions to a minimum by offering impacted associates the opportunity to apply for other vacant positions within the health system.

4. Orleans Community Health attributed the cuts and reassignments to the change in designation last year to a critical access hospital and a decrease in patient volume. Ms. Jacobson said the reductions and reassignments also come at a time when area health providers are facing increasing pressure to find operational efficiencies amid continued cuts in healthcare reimbursement.
