Lafayette General Health names new CMO: 6 things to know

Layfayette (La.) General Health has named Ziad Ashkar, MD, CMO.

Here are six things to know about Dr. Ashkar.

1. He will begin his new job Nov. 1.

2. In his new role Dr. Ashkar will work with system administrators to develop and assess quality metrics, officials said.

3. Prior to this new role, he was section chief of medicine, teaching Louisiana State University residents at Lafayette-based University Hospital & Clinics. He took over the teaching program and helped guide it to full accreditation in February, officials said.

4. Dr. Ashkar has practiced as a nephrologist at Acadiana Renal Physicians since 2002. In his new CMO position, he will give up his private practice, but will continue to teach LSU residents.

5. Previously, he was CMO of Lafayette (La.) General Medical Center from 2011 to 2013. He was also a member of LGMC's Medical Executive Committee and was chairman of medicine from 2009 to 2011.

6. Dr. Ashkar earned his Bachelor of Science and his Doctor of Medicine from American University of Beirut, Lebanon, where he also completed his internship in surgery. He did his residency in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland-Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Following a fellowship in nephrology at Atlanta-based Emory University, Dr. Ashkar earned a Master of Business Administration from LSU in Baton Rouge, a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins and a Doctor of Science from Tulane University in New Orleans.
