CEO out at Massachusetts system

Win Brown, president and CEO of Gardner, Mass.-based Heywood Healthcare for the past 12 years, will be leaving the system, according to a June 6 news release shared with Becker's.

"As Heywood Healthcare charters its path forward, we acknowledge the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare and our goal of continuing to meet the needs of the community," the health system said in the release. "As we continue this journey, the Heywood Healthcare board of trustees is announcing a change in the leadership structure."

Heywood Healthcare said the new leadership structure includes the appointment of Rozanna Penney, CRNA, vice president of patient care services, chief nursing officer and COO, and executive director of Heywood Medical Group, and Tom Sullivan, vice president of financial services, as co-CEOs.

"This is an untraditional model but one that capitalizes on the internal strength of the leadership team and the work before us, focused on community healthcare accompanied by financial and operational excellence," Heywood Healthcare Board Chair Robert Chauvin said in the release. "The board is highly confident that this leadership structure, along with the help of our dedicated employees, will carry forward the Heywood Healthcare mission, to provide exceptional patient-centered care."

Mr. Brown took the helm of Heywood Healthcare in 2011.

Recently during his tenure, Heywood Hospital announced it was ready to support regional obstetric and maternity care after UMass Memorial Health announced plans to close the maternity ward at its HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital in September. In April, Heywood Hospital also announced it would close its pulmonary unit due to financial reasons. The Gardner News also reported that the hospital's new surgical pavilion remains under construction; it is expected to open in April 2024.

Before Joining Heywood Healthcare, Mr. Brown served as vice president of administration at Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital, according to his LinkedIn page

Heywood Healthcare, an independent, community-owned healthcare system, consists of Heywood Hospital in Gardner, Athol (Mass.) Hospital, Heywood Medical Group and The Quabbin Retreat.
