Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente is ramping up efforts to provide free legal aid for patients facing eviction or other legal-related housing challenges, the health system said Oct. 19.
In 2021, Kaiser launched a partnership with Washington, D.C.-based George Washington University and HealthBegins to address health inequities caused by unjust housing policies. Since then, more than 1,600 Kaiser members and their families have received legal support, two-thirds of whom are people of color.
Now, the effort is expanding systemwide, with the goal of helping up to 4,500 people access housing-related legal support and preventing up to 10,000 evictions by 2025.
