8 hospital construction projects worth $1B or more in 2019

In 2019, eight hospitals and health systems announced, began construction on or unveiled facility expansions and renovations with price tags of $1 billion or more.

1. Kaiser plans $13B expansion in Baltimore area
Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente plans to open 10 new medical facilities in the Baltimore area as part of a $13 billion expansion plan.

2. Stanford opens $2B hospital 
After 10 years of planning and construction, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Stanford Health Care opened a $2 billion hospital on Nov. 17.

3. Emory Healthcare starts building $1B 'health innovation district'
Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare broke ground Oct. 4 on its musculoskeletal institute, part of the system's planned $1 billion "health innovation district."

4. New York's Mount Sinai to invest $1B in facility improvements
Mount Sinai Health System plans to invest $1 billion into facility upgrades and expansions in downtown New York City. 

5. City of Hope invests $1B in new cancer hospital
Duarte, Calif.-based City of Hope will invest $1 billion in a new hospital and research center conducting clinical trials of new drugs and devices in Irvine, Calif.

6. Northwell Health's Lenox Hill Hospital plans $2B campus revamp
Northwell Health's Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City is preparing a $2 billion revitalization that will include upgraded clinical areas and residential apartments.

7. Penn Medicine alters design of $1.5B pavilion
The design team responsible for Philadelphia-based Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania's $1.5 billion pavilion has changed its plans for the layout and shape of the building. The building is expected to be completed in 2021.
