Hundreds of COVID-19 tests thrown out after outbreak shuts down Maryland lab

Almost 500 COVID-19 PCR tests taken Jan. 10 at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., were thrown out, CBS affiliate WJZ 13 said Jan. 16.

A Harford County Health Department official said the agency's main lab suffered a COVID-19 outbreak, so the saliva samples were rerouted to a backup lab, according to the report. But the extra time in transit meant the samples expired before they arrived.

Rapid antigen tests taken the same day at Ripken Stadium were not affected, the report said.
