UChicago Medicine nurses cancel strike

Members of the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, have called off a planned March 14 strike at UChicago Medicine after reaching a tentative agreement with management on a new labor contract.

The union represents 2,800 nurses at UChicago Medicine, according to NNOC/NNU. UChicago Medicine, which includes the flagship 811-bed University of Chicago Medical Center, has roughly 13,000 employees total.

Union members announced the tentative deal on March 11.

"Our decision to call a strike forced management to address a number of our outstanding demands at the bargaining table," Stephanie Gamboa, RN, said in a news release. "We're looking forward to ratifying our new contract, which will improve working conditions for nurses and healthcare for our patients."

The union said its members will vote on ratifying their new contract on March 12 and March 13, and more information about the new agreement will be available when the ratification vote is complete.

Union members voted to authorize a strike in February. Management and nurses began negotiating a new labor contract in October.
