Gainesville, Fla.-based Shands HealthCare has announced it will undergo a restructuring in which its Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville and Shands Jacksonville will become independent entities, according to a Gainesville Sun report.
Under the current structure, Shands Gainesville is the parent company of the Jacksonville facility. The new structure would make both campuses separate, "sister" institutions with two governing boards, though both would remain under the University of Florida umbrella, according to the report.
The restructuring is intended to allow the Jacksonville facility to address the health needs of its community in "a more nimble fashion," James Burkhart, CEO of Shands Jacksonville, said in the report.
