The CDC is investigating fake Botox injections that have hospitalized at least four people in two states, NBC News reported April 10.
Health departments in Illinois and Tennessee have reported cases of "botulism-like illness" that have hospitalized two people in each state. The cases may be linked to counterfeit Botox. Tennessee reported two additional cases that did not warrant hospitalization.
In Illinois, the injections were given by a nurse "who was performing work outside her authority," the state's health department said.
The agency said it is coordinating a multistate outbreak investigation after it became aware of a few cases of botulism-like illnesses from botulinum toxin injections administered in non-medical settings.
Warnings about medical procedures at unregulated med spas are rising, according to the report.
