UPMC Lures Infectious Disease Associates Away From West Penn

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has acquired Infectious Disease Associates in Bloomfield, Pa., luring it away from West Penn Allegheny Health System, with which it had previously been associated, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

The move further ramps up competition between the two competitors for physicians since Highmark, the largest insurer in Pennsylvania, announced plans to acquire ailing West Penn, also based in Pittsburgh.

In August, West Penn/Highmark announced it had lured six physicians away from UPMC.

According to the report, West Penn has attracted roughly 100 physicians to its network, with around "a dozen or so" coming from UPMC, while UPMC has added more than 330 physicians.
