Tufts Medical Center CEO: Consumers Must Accept Higher Prices or Fewer Choices

At a recent business breakfast, the outgoing CEO of Boston's Tufts Medical Center said consumers will have to accept higher healthcare prices or restricted options to make the new system work, according to a Boston Herald report.

Ellen Zane spoke at a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce breakfast event, saying there is no magic bullet to healthcare reform and cuts are unavoidable.

"The way it will happen on the federal level is by cutting reimbursements to providers and benefits to consumers. There's no way around it," Ms. Zane said, according to the report.

She also said healthcare reform was accomplished "on the backs of providers" and that reform in Massachusetts was paid for by cuts to providers. Ms. Zane said access to quality healthcare remains an issue in Massachusetts, even though the state has succeeded in covering most of the state's population.
