Partners CEO Dr. David Torchiana abruptly steps down

Boston-based Partners HealthCare President and CEO David Torchiana, MD, reportedly stepped down from his leadership roles Jan. 28, two sources familiar with the matter told The Boston Globe.

"I am fortunate to have worked at MGH and Partners for my entire professional life and to have been given the opportunity to lead us forward at the culmination of my career," Dr. Torchiana said in a statement to the publication.

One source told The Boston Globe there had been lingering tension between Dr. Torchiana and leaders at two major hospitals in the Partners system.

"There's been a lot of friction between him and the hospitals," according to the individual, who spoke to the publication under the condition of anonymity, as Partners has not formally announced Dr. Torchiana's departure.

Dr. Torchiana has served as chief executive of the state's largest health system since 2015.

The Boston Globe reports that some of Dr. Torchiana's recent decisions, including the proposed acquisitions of Providence-based Care New England and Wellesley, Mass.-based Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, presented a cause for concern among other Partners leadership.

Scott Sperling, chair of Partners' board of directors, released a statement to employees confirming Dr. Torchiana's retirement at the end of April.

"Last night, Dr. David Torchiana informed the Partners Board of his intent to retire at the end of April. This is something that I know Torch has been contemplating for some time. Torch has been a valued leader, and he has led this organization in a thoughtful and effective manner," he said in the statement.

Mr. Sperling said the board will work on the details of a national search for Dr. Torchiana's relplacement during the coming weeks.
