Incentive compensation has been linked to performance quality and patient experience. Nurse practitioners could be rewarded, for example, for helping to prevent readmissions.

To assess compensation practices, SullivanCotter surveyed healthcare organizations’ compensation departments and looked at APP incentive amounts by specialty group. The data stems from each organization’s human resource information system.

The median incentive amounts paid to NPs and PAs by specialty group:

Primary care: $9,425

Surgical: $8,975

Medical: $8,112

Hospital-based: $8,051
