In the last two months, 10 hospitals and health systems announced, advanced or completed expansion and renovation projects with price tags of $500 million or more.

Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke's University Health System on Nov. 20 opened its hospital in Lehighton, Pa.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey voiced concerns over Boston-based Mass General Brigham's $400 million expansion plans for three ambulatory care centers, which she said will raise healthcare costs and generate about $385 million in profits a year for the hospital, according to a report she released Nov. 17.

Philadelphia-based Temple University Health System said Nov. 18 it will turn the campus it acquired earlier this year into a hospital for women's health. 

Bessemer, Alabama-based Medical West Hospital Authority, an affiliate of UAB Health System, began construction Nov. 17 on its new 412,000-square-foot hospital and 127,000-square-foot medical office building, which is a $400 million investment.

University of California, Irvine and UCI Health began construction on their $1.3 billion medical complex, which includes a 350,000-square-foot, 144-bed acute care hospital with an emergency room.

Marks, Miss.-based Quitman Community Hospital reopened Nov. 12 after being closed for five years and includes a 24-hour emergency department, WLBT reported Nov. 12.

Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Lutheran Health Network, part of Community Health Systems, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 12 for its $118 million hospital in Indiana, according to WANE.

The Department of Veterans Affairs broke ground Nov. 11 on its Louisville, Ky.-based $840 million hospital called the Robley Rex VA Medical Center, about 15 years after the department announced the plans, Wave 3 News reported.

Children's Hospital New Orleans opened its new 230,000-square-foot, $300 million campus expansion Nov. 10, which took four years to complete and increased the hospital's footprint by more than 50 percent.

Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger is investing $180 million to build a multifloor, freestanding orthopedic care facility in Buckhorn, Pa., which will be called The Orthopaedic Center Pennsylvania.

ProHealth Care will open its new Mukwonago, Wis., hospital Jan. 24, which will be a full-service community hospital under ProHealth's Waukesha location and the fourth hospital in the health system.

Orlando (Fla.) Health hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Nov. 9 for its new 320,000-square-foot Lake Mary, Fla., campus, which includes two six-story towers.

The COVID-19 pandemic not only delayed several hospital capital projects but also made long-term changes to how these projects are developed. 

Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke's University Health System dedicated its Carbon Campus hospital in Leighton, Pa., according to the Morning Call.

University of California San Diego broke ground on the first phase of its 15-year, $2.5 billion to $3 billion construction project, which in total has five phases.

Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, Ill., began its $107 million improvement project Nov. 3, which will expand and renovate the facility, the Daily Herald reported.
