Hospitals and unions: 7 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported the following events related to hospital-union relationships — including strikes, legal battles, rallies and contract agreements — since April 13.

1. Affinity nurses plan food drive to provide snacks to patients amid hospital policy changes
Unionized registered nurses from Affinity Medical Center in Massillon, Ohio, attempted to collect food after alleging the hospital stopped providing snacks for patients in nursing units. However, Affinity said in a statement necessary patient food items are stocked on the floors, and a personal ambassador can be contacted to bring the requested item to the patient if a needed item is not stocked. Affinity added the hospital is unable to accept outside food donations. 

2. Fountain Valley Regional employees protest over contract, working conditions
Healthcare workers at Fountain Valley (Calif.) Regional Hospital and Medical Center picketed, calling for a fair contract and improved working conditions.

3. Delaware County Memorial workers vote in favor of 3-year labor agreement
Nurses and technicians at Drexel Hill, Pa.-based Delaware County Memorial Hospital ratified a contract agreement with the hospital's owner, Los Angeles-based Prospect Medical Holdings.

4. Fresenius Kidney Care workers authorize potential strike
Nurses and healthcare workers from Fresenius Kidney Care in New York approved a possible strike.

5. Laid-off HCMC workers drop discrimination claims but continue lawsuit
Minneapolis-based Hennepin County Medical Center and the union representing employees who were reassigned or laid off earlier in 2017 reached a settlement.

6. Baystate Franklin nurses to picket amid contract negotiations
Nurses at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, Mass., scheduled a picket for April 27 in hopes of expediting a contract agreement.

7. Geisinger Community Medical Center strikes tentative labor deal with nurses
Registered nurses at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, Pa., reached a tentative agreement with hospital management.
