Centrist Democrat coalition backs Alexander-Murray bill

The Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 18 centrist House Democrats, announced Thursday its support of the Alexander-Murray healthcare stabilization bill, according to The Hill.

Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Patty Murray, D-Wash., proposed a bill Oct. 17 to provide funding for cost-sharing subsidies while also giving states flexibility regarding ACA regulations. Although there is currently no House version of the bill, the Blue Dog Coalition aims to craft one.

"This endorsement is a call to action in the House to develop a bill that mirrors the Alexander-Murray healthcare legislation and bring it to the floor for full consideration," said Rep. Daniel Lipinski, D-Ill., Blue Dog Coalition co-chair for policy.

While the Alexander-Murray proposal has garnered some bipartisan support, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he will not bring the bill to a vote unless President Donald Trump approves it. President Trump initially approved the measure before saying he could never support a bill that funds cost-sharing subsidies.
