Junior volunteers making a difference at North Carolina hospital

High school students from across the U.S. dedicated their summer vacation to volunteering at Mount Airy, N.C.-based Northern Regional Hospital, according to an Aug. 21 report in The Mount Airy News.

The hospital received more than 50 applications for the annual program, and 25 student volunteers were selected and worked through the summer months and logged 1,353 volunteer hours. The student application process included essays, letters of recommendation, and personal interviews.

Tina Beasley, manager of hospital volunteer services, said they worked closely with hospital staff to place students in relevant areas to expose them to many different career possibilities within the hospital.

"There are so many careers, both clinical and non-clinical, at Northern Regional Hospital that many students aren’t even aware of. This program allows them to see those careers first-hand in a real-world environment. Our hope is that we can provide experiences to help set them on their desired career path," Ms. Beasley said.

The student volunteers worked in almost every hospital area, including surgery, emergency, security, and the birthing center, according to the news release.
