Wisconsin man drowns after fleeing hospital

A Wisconsin man drowned after fleeing the hospital, NewsBreak reported March 1.

An investigation by the Sawyer County assistant medical examiner said Justin Kingfisher, 34, was taken to Hayward Area Memorial Hospital by his parents. He had reportedly been drinking heavily for the past week and once he stopped, experienced lightheadedness, disorientation and hallucinations. He tried to leave once but was brought back to the hospital. After a CT scan, Mr. Kingfisher fled again Jan. 12 and nurses were unable to catch him, the report said.

Law enforcement found him in a nearby creek, and Mr. Kingfisher was pronounced dead after 47 minutes of CPR.

"Our thoughts and sympathy are extended to everyone impacted by the loss of Justin Michael Kingfisher," a statement from a hospital spokesperson read, according to NewsBreak. "Our staff and medical community have been deeply impacted by this tragic event. The loss of a patient is one of the most difficult circumstances a healthcare worker may ever encounter. As a result of the challenges presented by this situation and similar scenarios we ensure that grief resources are always available to our clinicians anytime they need support."
