Patient dies by suicide in New Jersey hospital

A patient shot and killed himself inside Inspira Medical Center in Vineland, N.J., on Sept. 9 in an incident that prompted lockdown of the hospital, according to the Courier Post

Police were called to the 262-bed hospital on reports of an active shooter, and the hospital was locked down per its security protocol. Police determined the shooting was an isolated incident and did not pose danger to patients, staff or visitors.

"We understand that an incident occurred at approximately 8:40 this morning at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, and a patient sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound while under our care," Inspira Health Network Vice President for Marketing Kathy Scullin told the Courier Post Sept. 9. The spokesperson confirmed the patient died. 

The patient's name was not made public, nor were details about where the shooting occurred and its proximity to patients and staff. The shooting is under investigation at this time by members of the Vineland Police Department Criminal Division.
