Police confirmed an officer-involved shooting on the campus of UNC Health Johnston on June 10 that left one person dead, The News & Observer reported.

A Johnston County deputy fatally shot an individual outside the Clayton, N.C.-based hospital shortly before 6 a.m., city officials told the publication.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office and Clayton Police Department immediately responded to the incident and secured the scene.

The shooting came "after an altercation" outside the 50-bed hospital, a spokesperson for UNC Health told Becker's. No hospital employees were harmed, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

"We are thankful that no hospital employees or patients were harmed and appreciate the rapid response by law enforcement," the spokesperson said. "All areas of the hospital are open. However, our security team is escorting all visitors and patients to their areas."
