Geisinger expands nurse career pathways for employees

Geisinger has added three positions to its career pathways program, which supports employees at the Danville, Pa.-based health system interested in pursuing a career in nursing or nursing support.

The Nursing Scholars Program launched in 2021 and has supported nearly 230 employees in becoming a registered nurse. It offers financial, educational and professional support. Under the expansion, employees who have worked at Geisinger for at least six months and who are not already a registered nurse or provider can apply to the program to have partial costs covered to pursue a career as a licensed practical nurse, surgical technologist or certified medical assistant.

Program participants will receive between $7,000 and $40,000 in financial support, depending on the career pathway chosen, according to an April 18 news release from the health system. Participants have a two- to five-year work commitment at Geisinger upon graduation.

"By expanding the Nursing Scholars Program offerings, we're creating more opportunities to build a team where everyone can practice at the top of their skill set while also helping employees further their careers," Janet Tomcavage, MSN, RN, executive vice president and chief nursing executive at Geisinger, said in the release. "Community members across our footprint can also join the Geisinger workforce and take advantage of this wonderful career advancement opportunity."
