Physicians' Role in Patient Satisfaction

Physicians play a large role in patient satisfaction. For example, anesthesiologists can affect patients' satisfaction by overseeing preoperative preparation, ensuring the patient understands the process for the day of surgery and managing postoperative pain, according to Robert Stiefel, MD, and Howard Greenfield, MD, principals of Enhance Healthcare.

In addition, better nurse and physician communication is associated with higher patient safety and patient satisfaction scores, according to a study by HealthGrades.

As hospitals will be held accountable for their Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems score under value-based purchasing, they should work to engage physicians in patient satisfaction improvement efforts.
