University Hospital to be Unaffected by NJ Higher Education Reorganization

Denise Rodgers, interim president of Newark-based University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, announced that Newark-based University Hospital will remain a part of UMDNJ regardless of the New Jersey's higher education reorganization or the hospital's potential affiliation, according to a New Jersey Star-Ledger report.

University Hospital is UMDNJ's teaching hospital and one of Newark's largest healthcare providers. Many Newark and Essex County officials had been concerned over conflicting reports about the proposed reorganization's effects on the hospital, according to the report.

Under the original reorganization plan, Rutgers University's Camden, N.J., campus would merge with Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J.; Rutgers University in Newark would take over UMDNJ's New Brunswick and Piscataway-based medical school, cancer institute and public health school; and the remaining pieces of UMDNJ would be renamed New Jersey Health Sciences University. New Jersey State would own University Hospital, but it would be "managed by a responsible private entity under a long-term contract," according to the report. However, Ms. Rodgers announced at a press conference that while UMDNJ is still open to a public-private partnership for University Hospital, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and his administration have told the university that it will not be "stripped" of the hospital because of the state's higher education structural changes.

Gov. Christie has set a July 1 deadline to complete the proposed restructuring plans.
