Florida's Health First to Open Viera Hospital, Will Compete With HMA's Wuesthoff Health

Rockledge, Fla.-based three-hospital Health First will open 100-bed, $166 million Viera (Fla.) Hospital next week, according to a Florida Today report.

The hospital is located between two hospitals owned by Rockledge-based Wuesthoff Health System, which for-profit Health Management Association acquired roughly six months ago.

A spokesperson for Health First said he is confident residents in the Viera area will "choose Viera Hospital over the HMA facility," according to the report.

The new hospital came after three attempts by Health First to build a facility in the area. State regulators were concerned about adverse effects from competition a new hospital would create, but eventually approved Health First's request in 2007, according to the report.
