Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital Combine Open-Heart Surgery Programs

Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, both in Providence, R.I., have merged their open-heart surgery programs, according to a news release by Lifespan, the parent company of both Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals.

Nikola Dobrilovic, MD, and James Fingleton, MD, cardiac surgeons at The Miriam Hospital, will now operate at Rhode Island Hospital. The Miriam Hospital will continue to offer cardiac diagnostic testing, interventional procedures, rehabilitation and prevention as part of its cardiac services program.

Timothy J. Babineau, MD, president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital, said Rhode Island, as well as other states, have seen a decline in open-heart surgery cases and that combining the program will provide better care to patients, according to the release. He also said in the release that merging these programs is the first step in creating a Cardiovascular Institute spanning both hospital campuses.
