29 physician specialties ranked by annual compensation

The average overall physician salary for 2019 is $313,000, which marks a 20 percent increase from 2015, according to Medscape's annual Physician Compensation Report.

The report is based on survey responses from nearly 20,000 practicing U.S. physicians in 30 specialties. Physicians answered questions about salary, number of hours worked, amount of time spent seeing patients and job satisfaction.

Below is a list of annual physician compensation by specialty. Note: The list includes a tie, which is denoted with a bullet point and results in a numerical listing of 28.

  3. Otolaryngology: $461,000
  4. Cardiology: $430,000
  5. Dermatology: $419,000
