New York hospital plans $2B campus revamp

Northwell Health's Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City is preparing a $2 billion revitalization that will include upgraded clinical areas and residential apartments.

The renovations would make all patient rooms private, expand and update operating rooms, expand the hospital's emergency department and create a hospital offering maternity services with a separate entrance. Lenox Hill Hospital occupies an entire city block and has 10 separate buildings that have been connected over nearly 100 years.

"Lenox Hill Hospital is one of the most storied institutions in Manhattan, serving communities throughout the city for more than 160 years," said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health. "This revitalization plan is the next step in ensuring Lenox Hill Hospital's continued success and underscores Northwell Health’s commitment to meeting the health needs of New Yorkers for generations to come."

The proposed 41-story, 200-bed residential building would provide ongoing funding for the hospital. As part of the revitalization plan, Northwell also would renovate the Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital and other outpatient facilities in New York City.

Northwell still requires city approval for the plan.
