Hawaii hospital seeks $7M from state for delayed construction

A proposed hospital in Kaanapali, Hawaii, is seeking a $7 million state grant for its $38.5 million construction, KHON2 reported Oct. 17.

West Maui Hospital was originally supposed to open in 2019, and construction has not started yet. A new proposed opening date has not been announced.

It will include five beds, two to three operating rooms and a 24-hour emergency department.

The hospital is not anticipating any staffing issues despite a shortage state- and nationwide. Hawaii currently has 1,000 open nursing positions and will require 110 more nurses each year until 2030, according to the news outlet.
