Bridgeport (Conn.) Hospital is finishing construction on its expanded neonatal intensive care unit, the first department in the hospital to be completely funded through philanthropy, according to the Connecticut Post.

The $7 million investment will expand the patient areas, which now include eight semi-private bays, six private bays, three private rooms and an overnight room. The hospital has been undergoing financial hardships and relied entirely on the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation for its NICU's funding.

"This is unprecedented in the 30-year history of the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation," said foundation President Steve Jakab, according to the Connecticut Post. "Normally we would share the cost of such a major upgrade with the hospital, which typically budgets a significant amount of those costs."
