Children's Hospital of Philadelphia | 100 Great Hospitals in America 2015

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Established in 1885, CHOP is the nation's first children's hospital. Inspired by the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, Francis West Lewis, MD, convinced two of his physician friends to join him in establishing a children's hospital in the United States. It started as a 12-bed hospital with a dispensary and has since grown into a 527-bed hospital, with a research institute and comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation center, and with more than 50 pediatric offices, specialty care centers and surgical centers, it also has the largest pediatric healthcare network in the nation.

CHOP is a Magnet-recognized facility and ranks nationally in all 10 pediatric specialties by U.S. News & World Report, making it one of 10 hospitals on the children's hospital Honor Roll. CHOP's Honor Roll status comes with an impressive report card: It ranks No. 2 in cancer, No. 3 in cardiology and heart surgery, No. 2 in diabetes and endocrinology, No. 4 in gastroenterology and GI surgery, No. 1 in neonatology, No. 3 in nephrology, No. 2 in neurology and neurosurgery, No. 4 in orthopedics, No. 1 in pulmonology and No. 3 in urology.

Aside from being the nation's first pediatric hospital, CHOP also provided the first formal medical training for pediatricians, the first neonatal surgical and pediatric ICU in the nation, the first vaccines for mumps, whooping cough, influenza and rotavirus and the first specialized training in pediatric emergency medicine, among other accomplishments.

This year, CHOP's accountable care organization earned Level 2 accreditation. It was the first children's hospital to become a Level 1 accredited ACO and one of five first organizations to be accredited nationwide.
