Robinson Memorial Hospital Granted Tax-Exempt Status

The Internal Revenue Service has approved the application of Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio, to convert from a county-owned hospital to a nonprofit one, according to an Akron Beacon Journal report.

Robinson Memorial Hospital officials have been looking to acquire tax-exempt status so the hospital could explore further partnership options with other organizations, according to the report. The approval from the IRS will essentially allow a new nonprofit organization, Robinson Health System, to lease the facility and land from the county for $50,000 per year. The move will be effective Jan. 1.

County commissioners approved the lease agreement last November. In February, Robinson Memorial Hospital and Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio, agreed to let their affiliation agreement expire at the end of this year, but now that the hospital has gained nonprofit status, it may consider partnering with Summa again or another organization.
