The amount of money Montana hospitals spent on charity care continues to increase, although it still varies widely across hospitals, according to a news release from Montana's attorney general office.
The fourth annual report on the charitable performance of Montana's non-profit hospitals includes the 10 largest hospitals in the state and 12 smaller critical access facilities.
According to the report, the large hospitals have increased charity care significantly over the past four years from a median 1.57 percent of their budgets in 2006 to 2.79 percent of their budgets in 2009. Montana's small hospitals continue to show a lower level of charity care overall, although there was an increase from 1.32 percent of their budgets in 2008 to 1.59 percent in 2009.
In total, the 22 Montana hospitals provided approximately $136 million in uncompensated care in 2009.
