HHS Proposes Rules to Add Face, Hand Transplants to National Organ Network

The Department of Health and Human Services has submitted proposed rules in the Federal Register recommending transplants of the face, hand and other body parts be included in the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network to improve access to this service, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

One of the motivations for regulating face and hand transplants is the increasing prevalence of these procedures, particularly among U.S. troops returning home.

HHS is accepting public comments on the proposed rules until Feb. 14.
