Nurses Union Reports Nurse Understaffing at Washington Hospital Center

National Nurses United, the largest nurses union in the country, asked Washington D.C.'s  health department to investigate nurse understaffing at Washington Hospital Center, according to a Washington Post report.

The union filed a report with the department on Monday, saying the understaffing has resulted in jeopardized patient care. The report listed 50 instances of unsound care, including patients not receiving medication on time and newborn infants not being promptly fed. The report did not include any deaths.

The 926-bed hospital said it plans to hire 200 nurses by June 30. It hired 385 nurses since Jan. 1, but 239 left, resulting in a net gain of 146.

Nurses delivered a copy of the report to hospital officials on Monday, urging them to address staffing issues immediately. Hospital officials called the report “seriously flawed” and full of factual errors.
