New York Senator Launches Investigation Into Peninsula Hospital's Bankruptcy

New York Senator Malcolm Smith (D-St. Albans) has launched an investigation into Peninsula Hospital's reported bankruptcy and planned closure, according to a Your Nabe report.

Sen. Smith's announcement closely follows the outcry of nurses and other hospital staff members of the Far Rockaway, N.Y., hospital who called for a hospital investigation. The hospital reportedly owes nearly $13 million to vendors, $2 million to the nursing home and still more to the union. Hospital officials submitted a plan for closure to the state Department of Health last week, but hospital employees are suspicious of whether the hospital's planned closure is only about financials.

Additional rallies against the hospital's planned closure are scheduled to take place this weekend. Peninsula Hospital's parent company MediSys is working with the state Department of Health on the closure though no date has yet been set. The department did not comment on the ongoing investigation or rallies.
